Characters

Aang is the fun-loving, 112-year-old protagonist of the series, who is biologically 12 years old but was frozen in an iceberg for 100 years. He is the current incarnation of the Avatar, the spirit of the planet in human form. Aang is a reluctant hero, who would prefer adventure over his job as the Avatar and making friends over fighting the Fire Nation.

Sokka is a 15-year-old warrior of the Southern Water Tribe. With his sister Katara, he accompanies Aang on his quest to defeat the Fire Lord. The joker of the group, Sokka cannot bend an element although he manages to use a boomerang and a sword.

Katara  is the last remaining waterbender from the Southern Water Tribe, due to an invasion by the Southern Raiders and kidnapping of all waterbenders in the tribe years previously. The fire nation killed her mother when she was a little girl. By the age of fourteen, she had mastered the art of waterbending, and thus began teaching Aang waterbending alongside his study of earthbending.

Toph  is a blind Earthbending grandmaster of the prestigious Bei Fong family in the Earth Kingdom. Her parents are overprotective and view her blindness as a disability. Though blind, Toph has the unique ability to use Earthbending to "feel" even the most minute vibrations in the earth, be it the presence of trees and buildings or the march of ants several meters away.

Prince Zuko had been exiled prior to the beginning of the series by his father, and believed that capturing the Avatar was the only way to regain his honor. Zuko's ancestry reflects his own conflicted nature; his paternal great-grandfather is Fire Lord Sozin, the one who started the war, while his maternal great-grandfather is Avatar Roku.

The Avatar is a boy of a 12-year-old who provides the last hope for restoring harmony to a land consumed by chaos. In a world balanced on the four nations of Water, Earth, Fire, and Air, people known as the Waterbenders, Earthbenders, Firebenders, and Airbenders have mastered their native elements. Though the masters can each manipulate their native elements, the only one with the power to manipulate all four elements is a young boy known as the Avatar. When the Avatar subsequently appears to die while still mastering his powers, the Fire nation launches a global war with the ultimate goal of global domination. One hundred years later, two teens discover that the Avatar and his flying bison have in fact been locked in suspended animation. Upon being freed from his prison, the Avatar embarks on an arduous quest to restore harmony among the four war-ravaged nations.
