Master Shifu

Master Shifu is the student of Oogway, and the trainer to all the greatest warriors in China, including Tai Lung, the Furious Five, and Po. He is at first very unwilling to train Po, as he does not believe he has what it takes to become the Dragon Warrior and defeat Tai Lung, and tries to make the training unbearable to force Po to give up. As such, Shifu is greatly annoyed at how Po embraces and endures all his attempts. After much convincing from his mentor and friend Oogway, as well as his new responsibility as the guardian of the Valley of Peace after Oogway's death, Shifu trains Po until he is ready to face Tai Lung.

Shifu once loved Tai Lung like a son after he was abandoned at his doorstep as a very young cub. He tried to subdue him after Tai Lung attacked the Valley and tried to take the Dragon Scroll by force, but was unable to destroy what he had created and raised. He became depressed and stiffened by this experience, which resulted in his training of the Furious Five to be much more strict. When Tai Lung returned, Shifu finally got the courage to fight him, but came extremely close to dying under Tai Lung's claws. After Tai Lung’s defeat, Shifu overcame his cynical nature. In Secrets of the Furious Five, it's revealed that he is also Tigress' adoptive father as well. He kindly taught her how to control her fury by playing a game of dominos with her, and later adopted her as his own daughter at an orphanage even when all the other adults adopted the other children and not her because of their fear of Tigress. These situations with Tai Lung and Tigress prove that Shifu can be an angelic and warmhearted person despite his superficial cynicism. Although small and aged, Shifu can move faster than any opponent. His ability comes from focus and precision, and Shifu exerts maximum force with minimum effort. His signature move is the Wuxi Finger Hold, which can destroy an opponent with the flex of a finger.

Po

Po is the main character of Kung Fu Panda. His early life is largely unrevealed, although he was evidently under the guardianship of his goose father, Mr. Ping, for as long as he can remember. Although unenthusiastic about the restaurant trade, he was evidently a studious apprentice considering the praised quality of his cooking. Po was reluctant to disappoint his father by revealing his true interests in Kung Fu. Though mild and friendly, he also has severely low self-esteem issues since he thought himself a failure for both being obese and of a species not known for a warrior tradition. The fact that he is prone to gorging when emotionally distraught is a contributing factor to his obesity. His main interest lies in the martial arts, of which he has developed an encyclopedic knowledge. He is able to recall the lore of warriors, famous combat moves, dates and historic artifacts. Although he was dubbed as the Dragon Warrior by Master Oogway (apparently by pure accident, but as Oogway stated "There are no accidents"), and Master Shifu and the Furious Five make no secret of their disdain for him, he endures their abuse in the hope of changing into someone he himself can respect. This tenacity eventually earns the respect of his peers and new teacher.

Eventually, Shifu discovers that Po can perform considerable physical feats when given a food incentive and uses that discovery to train the panda with a custom regime. At the end of the training, during a chopsticks-sparring match over dumplings, Po demonstrates not only considerable skill in combat, but also some emotional maturity that allows him to somewhat reduce his dependence on food. At the climatic battle, Po manages to defeat Tai Lung with an improvised combat style that takes advantage of his body fat to not only shield his nerves from nerve strikes, but also to incorporate it in defensive attacks.
