Melman the Giraffe, a hypochondriac giraffe who was transferred to the Central Park Zoo as a young adult. Because of his previous stay in the Bronx Zoo, Melman believes that he's a real worldly guy, the most experienced in his circle of friends. He's also on a lot of medication.    
Alex the Lion, the most popular animal in the New York City zoo. Nicknamed The King of New York, he is quite against staying in the wild and tries to get everyone to go back to the zoo in New York. He develops a fondness for eating steaks but has no idea what they actually are made of until a good halfway into the movie's plot.    
Marty the Zebra, the instigator behind everyone's adventure on Madagascar. He constantly dreams about the wild and wonders what life would be like beyond the zoo (unlike Alex who is satisfied with how things are). One night, following the successful escape of the penguins, he leaves the zoo causing his friends to try and rescue him. When caught, animal rights activists have them shipped to a wildlife preserve in Kenya. But the penguins hijack the ship and accidentally cause the crates containing Marty and his friends to fall off. The crates float on the ocean until they reach Madagascar. Because of this, Alex and Marty seem to fight and argue a lot in the film.  
Mason and Phil are the sophisticated chimpanzees at the Central Park Zoo, preferring to "read" the newspaper and enjoy a cup of coffee in the morning; for them, freedom means attending a Tom Wolfe lecture to "fling poo at him." Mason speaks with an RP accent and plans the daily affairs for Phil and himself, but is unable to read.    
Julien is the king of lemurs. He is egocentric and he thinks he knows everything. He is not evil, the things he does are for the well being of the community. Maurice the Aye-aye, Julien's assistant and second in command. He is in charge of announcing Julien to his court, though he finds this task tedious. He is generally less impressed by Julien than the other lemurs. Maurice shows the most intelligence in Julien's court, and is the only one to recognize Alex as a potentially greater threat than the fossa. Skipper, also known as Joe-The leader of the group, He seems to be rounder than the rest of the penguins. He is good at barking out orders, naming plans and slapping. Rico - Psychotic knife wizard and explosives expert. Rico displays a certain talent for the Culinary arts. Rendering a raw fish to sushi in mere seconds. And carving a block of ice into the shape of a christmas tree. Can store various items in his stomach (like the dynamite stick in the Christmas Caper short). Also seems to be an excellent swimmer (he is the only penguin seen swimming). He has dark circles under his eyes. Had a mohawk and scar on his face in the Christmas Caper (which generates some inconsistency as the short took place before the actual movie as they are all still at the zoo, and he did not have any scar on the movie). The only real words known in his vocabulary are "Eggnog", "Hai" (Japanese) and "Ka-boom."       Gloria, of the four, was the most fat and calm. As a hippopotamus, Gloria had a passive nature when it came to most problems, and served as the voice of reason for her friends.
Moto moto is a big, handsome, muscular hippo with a deep voice who very easily gets girls to flip over him. Moto moto is not extremely bright, but he's sweet and is the ladies' man. He falls in love with Gloria and Gloria is delighted, but later on he confesses that the only reason he loves her is because she is "huge and chunky." Because of this Gloria breaks up with him on their first date, but they are still friends.

2005 At the Central Park Zoo, Marty the zebra is celebrating his tenth birthday, but longs to see the rest of the world from outside his pampered life at the zoo. Believing that he can find wide-open spaces to run in Connecticut, he joins with the zoo's penguins who are trying to escape the zoo. Marty's friends, Alex the lion, Gloria the hippo and Melman the giraffe, realize Marty's folly and try to follow him. The four, along with the penguins and two monkeys, Mason and Phil, eventually find themselves at Grand Central Station, but are quickly sedated by tranquilizer darts. The zoo, under protest of animal-rights activists, are forced to ship the animals by sea to Kenya. During their travels, the penguins manage to escape and take over the ship, intent on taking it to Antarctica. Their antics on the bridge cause the crates containing Marty, Alex, Gloria, and Melman to fall off the boat and wash ashore on Madagascar. The animals are soon able to regroup, initially believing themselves to be in San Diego, California. Upon exploring, however, they come across a pack of lemurs lead by King Julien XIII, and quickly learn of their location. Alex blames Marty for their predicament and attempts to signal for help to get back to civilization, while Marty finds the wild to be exactly what he was looking for, with Gloria and Melman soon joining him in enjoying the island. Alex eventually comes around, though his hunting instincts begin to return after being away from the pampered zoo life for so long. The group is accepted by the lemurs, though King Julien's adviser, Maurice, cautions them about Alex being a predator. King Julien ignores Maurice's concerns and persuades the group to help the lemurs fend off the fossa who hunt the lemurs as prey. When Alex begins to turn on his friends and the lemurs, unable to overcome his instincts, King Julien bans him to the far side of the island with the fossa. Marty begins to regret seeing what Alex has turned into. The penguins, having been to Antarctica and finding it not to their liking, land the boat on Madagascar. Seeing this as a chance to return Alex to New York, Marty, with Gloria and Melman, goes to find Alex but become trapped by the fossa. Alex suddenly appears and approaches Marty as if he were prey, but then turns on the fossa to scare them away from the lemur territory forever, showing Marty he has overcome his predatory nature, and satisfy his meat craving through sushi instead of steak. As lemurs throw a bon voyage celebration for the foursome, the penguins decide not to break the news that the ship has run out of fuel and that they are still stuck on the island.
2008 In the past, Alex (Ben Stiller) the lion lived in Africa with his father Zuba (Bernie Mac), the pride's alpha lion, and mother Florrie (Sherri Shepherd), along the rest of the pride, including the main villian Makunga (Alec Baldwin), who always wanted to be the leader. One day Alex—known as Alakay to his parents—is captured by poachers after his father turns away for a moment because of Makunga. Zuba chases after his captured son, but Alakay's crate falls into a nearby river and drifts off to sea. Alex is then discovered, found washed ashore in New York, were he is put in the zoo, named Alex, and later becomes an idol to many New Yorkers, also making friends with a young zebra, a hippo, and a giraffe. The film cuts to the four heroes saying goodbye to their lemur friends while taking off in a plane to New York, along with King Julien (Sacha Baron Cohen) and Maurice (Cedric the Entertainer), the chimpanzees, and Mort (Andy Richter) who did not get into the plane on time, but hangs on to the wing outside as they take off. Over the country, they run out of fuel and crash land "safely" in the African plains. The penguins, who controlled the flight say it might take 6 to 9 months to rebuild the plane, and so Alex, Marty (Chris Rock), Gloria (Jada Pinkett Smith), and Melman (David Schwimmer) take off to find any help. However, the chimpanzees find help. The animals encounter a tourist car, with New Yorkers sitting in it. Alex recognizes the old lady "Nana" that kicked his butt at the train station, and they engage in a brawl, nevertheless the old lady beats Alex again. Later the humans are carjacked by the penguins as they execute "Operation Tourist Trap" for extra supplies to rebuild the plane. However, as they make their getaway, Nana is awoken in the back seat by their "rock n' roll racket" (Boston's "More than a Feeling"). The penguins toss her through the windshield without much ceremony, and then, realizing she isn't dead, reverse the Land Rover and hit her again. Nana, apparently uninjured, leads the rest of the humans off to make camp, saying she doesn't want to stay out in the open because she's "too old to die." Alex and the rest meet up with a giant group of animals including other lions, hippopotamuses, giraffes and zebras and more. There Alex is reunited with his father and mother. Marty meets an enormous pack of zebras that sound exactly like him, Gloria falls for a hippo named Moto Moto (will.i.am) whose name means "Hot, HOT"; he makes Melman jealous, because he has deep feelings for her. Melman becomes the witch doctor for other giraffes so he can stop his species from dying in holes. Before Alex can join the pride he must complete a challenge, which is scheduled the next day. Makunga now has the chance to become the alpha lion by tricking the returning son.
2009 When Santa and his reindeer crash onto Madagascard it's up to Alex, Marty, Gloria, Melvin and the penguins to save Christmas.
2011 The zoo is closed due to Christmas Eve and the penguins are on a mision to launch a Christmas party for the smallests of the zoo. But when everything becomes a kaos, Skipper realises that the only person who can help is Santa... But, are they going to be able to find him before is too late?
2012 Alex, Marty, Gloria and Melman are still fighting to get home to their beloved Big Apple. They are waiting for the Pinguins who are going to help them go back. When they try to reach them they are going to find some troubles. Their journey takes them through Europe where they find the perfect cover: a travelling circus, which they reinvent, Madagascar style.
2015 Skipper, Kowalski, Rico and Private join forces with uncoverd organization The North Wind to stop the villainous Dr. Octavius Brine from destroying the world as we know it, because he is jelaous of the attention that the pinguins, from all the zoos around the world, receive. So he is going to transform them into something ugly so he can be beautiful.
