Characters

Timon

Timon's name is one of the few characters that has no meaning in Kiswahili, although it means "he who respects" in Greek. His name may also derive from Shakespeare's tragedy Timon of Athens, a reference to the Shakespearean origin of the film's plot. He lives an easy life with "no worries". He sings Hakuna Matata that reflects his way of thinking.

Rafiki

He is a monkey that lives in a tree and he is old and wise. Rafiki provides important counsel to the adult Simba when the latter is trying to determine his destiny. His tail looks broken and bent. His name means "friend" in Swahili and Arabic.

Zazu

He is Mufasa's majordomo. His proper, dignified, nervous, and easily-rattled personality is the polar opposite in temperament of the protagonists lions Simba and Nala.

The Lion King presents the story of a lion cub's journey to adulthood and acceptance of his royal destiny. Simba begins life as an honored prince, son of the powerful King Mufasa. The cub's happy childhood turns tragic when his evil uncle Scar murders Mufasa and drives Simba away from the kingdom. In exile, the young lion befriends the comically bumbling pair of Pumbaa the warthog and Timon the meerkat and lives a carefree jungle life. As he approaches adulthood, however, he is visited by the spirit of his father, who instructs him to defeat the nefarious Scar and reclaim his rightful throne.

1998

This direct-to-video sequel to The Lion King, which climaxed with Simba enthroned as the ruling king of beasts following the death of the evil Scar. Simba and his mate Nala issue a triumphant announcement of the birth of Lion Princess Kiara.  Given to misadventures and mischief, Kiara wanders into the forbidden Outlands, the haunt of Scar's exiled minions, and there she encounters another mischievous cub, Kovu, son of lioness Zira , once a close friend of the late Scar and now the leader of the exiles. Zira plots against Kiara, drawing her son into her scheme. Kovu has divided loyalties as his love for Kiara deepens.

2004

Disney presented this retelling of the Academy Award-winning animated musical. Switching the perspective to that of meerkat Timon and warthog Pumbaa, The Lion King 1 1/2 puts a new spin on the events of the original film. This time around, the comic duo are conveniently at the center of much of the story.
